The other fun thing was all the references to bands and songs that I had to then go look up to understand some of the subtext/references. It’s got a healthy seasoning of melodramatic, but it’s also rather fun. This is strong, powerful “I can’t live without you” kind of feelings once they acknowledge their attraction. But its just a superficial resemblance, I think.Ĭallihan exhibits a really distinctive style with alternating chapter first person POVs of both Libby and Killian who more or less narrate what’s going on with lots of inner monologues and all the feelz. I had just seen Lady Gaga’s A Star is Born, so I couldn’t help make comparisons in the way the drunken super star picks up an unknown and sings her songs with his band, etc. How will their relationship survive when this reclusive, introverted woman discovers he’s a superstar? She’s young, pretty, and no slouch with a guitar herself. The neighbor doesn’t recognize him (plot and all that) but ends up taking pity on him and enters into a friendship. He shows up drunk and naked on the his neighbor’s lawn. This first one follows their lead singer, Killian, as he goes to a remote island to recuperate after one of the band members attempts suicide. Idol is the first in a series with a famous rock band–Kill John– at the center of it. I was a fan of Callihan’s Darkest London steampunky historic romance series, so I thought I’d try one of her contemporary romances.
